Travel might be off the cards for the next little while, but following a summer of adventures close to home, I was lucky enough to squeeze a small trip to Cambridge in a few weeks back. Having only ever visited in summer before, when a day on the river is far more appealing, it felt like a totally different place in early evening shadows and a blaze of autumn colour.
It goes without saying that Cambridge is a beautiful, historic city and you can easily while away the hours wandering the streets, snooping in fancy college buildings and window shopping. Like all things at the moment, day trips are a bit different, so where I’d usually be keen to seek out the best spots of lunch and dinner (and I’m told on good authority there are plenty), this trip was all about catching up with friends and enjoying time outside. Having picked the most gorgeous sunny autumn day, we headed straight for the botanic garden. If you’re looking for fun, inexpensive things to do in Cambridge, this should be top of your list.
Life has felt so much slower this year and it’s been more important than ever to celebrate the little things. As trips have been so few and far between, it felt all the more special to spend time soaking up the turn of the season somewhere different. So until next time I can get away, I’ll be relishing wearing big jumpers, rewatching my favourite films with a hot chocolate and rinsing my Spotify release radar playlist.
