A Summer Staycation in Devon

The sea in the distance, framed by dunes

This year, more than ever, getting away from it all has been so needed but with flying off the cards our holiday this year needed to be a little closer to home. I spent a week in Devon in the middle of the heatwave and I’ve never appreciated the UK more.

Spending days on the beach, dipping in and out of the sea, as well as getting out on the water paddle boarding (harder than it looks!) and kayaking was a dream. The stretch of coast path from South Milton Sands to Bantham Beach is beautiful, with hidden coves and empty stretches of sand.

This part of the UK really has everything, which why it makes a great option for a summer staycation; you’ve got beautiful beaches and rolling countryside, as well as the wild moorlands. Taking a trip to Dartmoor is a must-do if you’re in this corner of the UK, seeing the wild horses roam among the heather is magic. We stopped off at Haytor and (some of us) made the scramble to the top of the rock. The weather can be changeable, it wouldn’t be a UK holiday if it wasn’t, so both a rain jacket and shorts were needed!

Ice creams at Hope Cove, watching the sun set behind Thurlestone rock and walking down to start Point Lighthouse as the fog rolled in were all highlights of the trip. We opted for a self-catering cottage on a working farm and waking up each day to the sound of sheep and farm life was a real novelty too.
