Things To Do In London This Christmas

Things To Do In London This Christmas

Now that it’s officially December and it’s socially acceptable to start blasting Christmas songs all day everyday, I thought I’d put together a little list of my favourite things to do in London in the festive season. I was lucky enough to live and study in the city for three years and winter is definitely my absolute favourite time of year there. If you’re planning a trip and need some inspiration, here’s what you should get up to.

Covent Garden

For all your Christmas shopping needs, skip the busy shopping centres and head straight to Covent Garden. Yes, it’s equally as bustling but it’s far more enjoyable to spend a day browsing along the cobbled streets and popping into all the quirky stores. You can easily make a day of it by booking cheap on-the-day theatre tickets and catching one of the top London shows in the evening. With street entertainers on every corner, it’s hard not to get into the spirit here.

Ice Skating At The Natural History Museum

Ice skating in London is probably at the top of the bucket list for most people and there’s so many different rinks to choose from. You can skate at lofty highs at the rooftop rink or feel fancy outside Somerset House but by far my favourite rink is outside the Natural History Museum. The backdrop doesn’t get much better and the Christmas tree in the middle is beautiful. Even if you’re a novice, like me, that spends more time clinging to the side than actually skating you’ll still have the perfect evening. The best time to visit is around 5pm, just as it’s starting to get dark!

Christmas at Kew

Kew is one of my favourite places in the city and each year at Christmas the gardens and greenhouses are transformed into a winter wonderland. An atmospheric and traditional light trail leads you around the park before reaching a dramatic finale. It can get a little busy at times on the path but it’s a really unique festive experience that I’d definitely recommend.

Southbank Christmas Market

Arguably the best London Christmas market is the one found on Southbank. The Nordic-inspired wooden huts are crammed full of festive treats and presents, making the perfect gifts for loved ones. Even if you’re not looking to do your Christmas shopping, the atmosphere is great. There’s music, lights and you’ll be spoilt for choice for food with tonnes of street food stands to check out. Plus, the Christmas market is just a stones throw away from some of the best London landmarks so it’s ideal if you’re looking to check off a few things from your to-do list!

Winter Wonderland

You can’t go wrong with Winter Wonderland, it’s brilliant for dates, days out with friends or fun family trips. Entry to the fun fair in Hyde Park is completely free but rides and entry to any of the activities, like the Magic Ice Kingdom or ice skating, cost money and usually have to be booked in advance. A lot of people say that Winter Wonderland is overrated but I’ve always had a good time!

There’s so many things to do in London at Christmastime it’s hard to know where to begin, but hopefully you’ve now got a few ideas up your sleeve to help get you in the festive mood.
