Adventures in Corfu

Adventures in Corfu

Corfu is a green gem of an island in the glittering blue sea. Life here is slow, each day long and hot.

The base for this trip was close to Paleokastriksta, a beautiful small bay sheltered by cliffs. Boats come and go taking people to other nearby beaches. In the evening you might see goats being shepherded down the street amongst the cars and tourists. The restaurants dotted along the hillside spring to life in the evening, although in late June the place still felt quiet. Watching the sunset over the bay is incredible.

The nearby monastery is worth the winding walk up the cliff as it has stunning panoramic views. It’s very peaceful, with beautiful plants everywhere. Entry is free but visitors must dress respectfully, with shoulders and legs covered. We fell in love with the stray cats and kittens running around the place and hoped they are looked after here!

Most of the week was spent exploring the coast- both on foot and by boat. From our apartment in Liapades we could walk to a number of beaches along dusty cliff side tracks. The sea was warm and perfect for snorkelling- there are tonnes of small fish to be spotted.

Some beaches, like Paradise Beach, are only accessible by boat, although be warned it’s not a smooth ride!

Corfu town itself is gorgeous and it is only a 30 minute drive from the east side of the island, where we stayed, to the west. Everything stayed open until late in the evening and the atmosphere was wonderful. I love being able to walk through the streets at night while it is still hot and just soak everything in. The gardens dedicated to Gerald and Lawrence Durrell are a beautiful place to explore in the evening.IMG_1600.JPGIMG_1506.JPG

Something about Corfu is just magical. Where are you going to be spending your summer?
