My short story ‘Scarf’ for National Flash Fiction Day 2025

National Flash Fiction Day (NFFD) is Saturday 15th June. I’m really happy to be featured again in this year’s celebration of all things short-form writing, Flash Flood.

This year’s story ‘Scarf’ is one that I first wrote at university, after freshly discovering short stories and how they can pack so much into so few words. I was reading a lot of Deborah Levy, best known for her award-winning novels like Hot Milk, but her short-story collection Black Vodka stays with me and I’d highly recommend picking it up for the dream-like worlds she creates.

That weight of silence, the importance of what’s unsaid and how so much of conversation and connection is filling in the gaps, is something that feeds into almost all of my writing.
