August was such a busy month and seemed to fly by but it was also a month filled with adventures and finding inspiration to get creative again.
‘A Month’ by Sho Shibuya at Unit London
I rushed to see this on its closing date after work and I’m so glad I went. This exhibition documents the passing of time through painting as a daily ritual. Shibuya buys a copy of The New York Times every day and paints the sunrise on the front cover. Sometimes clear, sometimes hazy, sometimes with words visible through the pastel colours each day is different.
“Shibuya keeps an unpainted copy of each newspaper, enabling him to look back at the events of each day and forming an archival collection for reference. Littered with these unpainted newspaper covers, the floor of the exhibition reminds us that reality still exists outside the world of these tranquil paintings. Even the most peaceful and innocent sunrise will occur while war is waged in Ukraine, while a spy balloon floats across the sky, or while an earthquake shakes Turkey and Syria. As such, Shibuya ensures that Month is never severed from humanity.” – Unit London
A trip to the seaside
A rare sunny weekend in August was perfect for a day trip to Camber Sands, somewhere I’ve not been before. It’s a lovely sandy beach, backed by dunes and a long stretch of coast. Being by the sea always calms me and it felt like the perfect way to switch off, book and beach towel in hand. Arrive early and leave before the crowds come.
Creative Projects
Off the back of taking this time to reset and get inspired again, a couple of creative projects I’ve been working on came out this month.
Firstly, some of my photography is on display at The Art Place. It’s the first time I’ve had work on display in a physical space which is so exciting. I had to pop in and have a look at my photos on the wall!
A piece I wrote for Mslexia about this little corner of the internet I’ve been creating since 2017 was in the ‘Blogability’ section of Issue 99 of the magazine. So cool to see my words in a magazine that I’ve read and loved for years! If you’re new here from there, hi, hello please drop me a follow and leave a comment – you might also like to check out the Substack I’m writing Muses on Pages.
Seeing these things come into fruition has really motivated and encouraged me to get back into creating and putting things out there. If anyone’s looking for a freelance writer please hmu!
