Paint with Me: Oil on Canvas Seascape

Painting of the sea on a small easel

Being in lockdown for the best part of a year has meant a lot of time to get stuck into old, and new, hobbies. I love painting, usually picking watercolours, inks or gouache over canvas and oils which I haven’t used for years. Something about starting with a big blank space intimidated me but with time on my hands I thought why not give it a go.

The painting probably took a good 4-5 days and, in all honesty, I didn’t really know what I was doing but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Building up layers over time means oil paints are a lot more forgiving than you’d think. Carving out the time to try something out as a learning process, rather than with a fixed end product in mind, is definitely something I want to do more of in the future.

I documented the process and you can see the video below, I’m by no means a Youtuber, so it’s far from perfect (and it was the depths of winter so the lighting isn’t great!). Videos by Moya, Milkcloud and Minnie Small have been endlessly inspiring and calming throughout this time – I hoped to capture just a pinch of that!
