Short Escapes: Southwold

Short Escapes: Southwold

Having grown up exploring corners of the UK’s coastline each summer, I love the British seaside. There’s just something unbeatable about a bank holiday weekend eating fish ‘n’ chips and soaking up the sun and that’s exactly how I spent the last long weekend.

Southwold seems a bit off the radar when it comes to East Anglian beaches but that’s great news for anyone looking for a relaxed day, or weekend, beside the sea. You’ll be far from the crowds but still have plenty to do, whether it’s wandering the pier and amusements or chilling out on the beach. It’s well worth the walk away from the pebbled beach to reach the sprawling sand dunes and picture-perfect beach huts.

The town itself is charming, with the iconic Southwold lighthouse towering over the pastel-coloured houses. On certain days of the week, you can visit the lighthouse and climb the tower for views across the sea.

The pier itself is lined with metal dedications to friends, lovers and family members. Each one reiterating a love for this peaceful seaside town and, when you’re reading them with tired feet and sandy skin after a day of exploring, it’s hard not to feel the same.
