Summer in Split

Summer in Split

When it comes to booking a holiday, I’m always looking for three things: great weather, stunning scenery and plenty to do. It’s safe to say that Split, on the Dalmatian Coast of Croatia, has it all. Here’s a little round up of what to get up to in this gorgeous corner of Europe.

The city itself is bustling and its not hard to see why Split has become such a popular tourist destination in recent years. Wandering through the city and taking in the Roman architecture is incredible. Diocletian’s Palace in particular is impressive both night and day.

The absolute highlight of the trip for me was a visit to Krka National Park (PSA it’s not pronounced ‘cracker’). It’s about an hour and half drive away from the main city of Split but it’s so worth the visit and, if you’ve haven’t hired a car, there are plenty of coach tours running daily. The national park is stunning – and huge, so you probably won’t get to see it all – a maze of lakes, waterfalls and rivers. We opted to do the popular tourist route, heading down from the Lozovac entrance to Skradinski buk. It was one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been and the swim in that gorgeous clear water at the bottom was unforgettable (side note: standing under a waterfall is refreshing in a leave-you-breathless-and-battered kind of way).

Give me a beach and I’ll be happy as a clam. The stony shores of Split are pristine, perfect for a lazy day of relaxing. There are some real gems to be found just outside of the city, so it’s well worth exploring if you prefer to get away from the crowds.

Finally, its worth mentioning the days we spent in Marjan Forest Park. The hill – which is a climb of around an hour if you’re like me and stop to take photographs every few minutes – overlooks the city, offering fantastic views. We visited the park a second time and opted to wander alongside the sea and into the forest, finding secret swimming spots. The perfect way to spend a long summer day in Split.
