Books To Cosy Up With This Christmas

Books To Cosy Up With This Christmas

If, like me, your idea of a perfect night in is getting stuck into a good book then you’re in the right place. There’s nothing like getting lost between the pages, especially when it’s grim outside and all you want to do is light some candles, put your pj’s on and relax. Whether you need a new read or you need some gift inspo for a  bookworm, hopefully my little book reviews of some of my favourite reads to cosy up with this Christmas help!

La Belle Sauvage by Phillip Pullman

Anyone looking for a long read to see them right through to the new year should definitely check this one out. I adored the ‘His Dark Materials’ series so naturally I was pretty excited about reading anything that explored this magical world some more. However, this book isn’t told by the much-loved Lyra and it is proving to be a little bit slow going so far but reviews have told me it’s worth it in the end. Either way, I’d still recommend it if you’re a fan of the previous series!

Happy by Fearne Cotton

For a lot of us winter can be a tough time. Shorter, darker days can leave you feeling low and lacking, especially once the excitement of Christmas has faded and January and February loom. Part auto-biography, part self-help guide this book is full of tips for managing life a little better and finding your personal version of happiness. It’s not at all like your typical self-help guide and instead provides useful, personal insights and reflective tasks. For anyone who struggles with anxiety or depression, the information here probably isn’t going to be revolutionary but it’s still a nice read to help find some perspective.

Let It Snow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle

Christmas is the time of cheesy rom-coms and if you’re a fan of consuming those in book form, this is the perfect read for you. Growing up I was a bit of a John  Green fan, which is what initially first led me to this collection of festive short stories. It features the work of Mr Green himself, alongside two other popular YA novelists, and if you’ve read any of his work before you’ll know what to expect. Is it a work of literary genius? No. But it’s a great quick read that’ll give you all the festive feels. I particularly liked that all three stories overlap.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

This one isn’t at all festive but it’s a gripping read all the same. As it’s a little longer, it’s the perfect book to get stuck into over the holidays. Set during WWII, the story follows Liesel, a young German girl who experiences first hand the horrors of the Nazi regime. It’s such a moving story, and one that is told so uniquely, that it’ll stay with you for a long time after you’ve finished reading. I definitely recommend this if you enjoyed The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas.

I’ve noticed that I do tend to read seasonally, let me know in the comments if you’re reading anything good at the moment as I’m always looking for new suggestions!

I really liked The Book Thief – although a little dark for the festive period I must say. A gripping read nonetheless though 🙂
